Veronika Witte

The central aspect of my artistic work is the body in its existential condition. My roots lie in sculpture, and I concern myself with issues relating to identity construction and the representation of the body in the age of the life sciences. What matters to me is the phenomenon of identity as a complex construct, as well as the connection between appearance, form and existence. From these issues arises, for me, the necessity to develop the sculptural and portrait concept further, the new formulation of which I have been pursuing for a long time in diverse and multi-disciplinary ways and thus exploring the connections between art, theatre and science, resolving or expanding the limits of these individual fields.

I have been using survey responses as the starting point for works since 2001. At the fictitious ISF, Institut für sozio-ästhetische Feldforschung [Institute for socio-aesthetic field research], together with Dr. Bodo Lippl from the Department of Social Sciences at the Humboldt University of Berlin, a six-page questionnaire was developed which forms the basis of artistic field research. Respondents are questioned about their own subjective feelings, ideas about the future with regard to their bodies, the social developments that are to be expected and the future of mankind in general. The results of this survey form the basis of my artistic investigation into the relationship of one’s own body and someone else’s.

At present the free sculptural work is in the forefront of my creativity, which concerns itself wholly with the ceramically and hermetically delimited figure and queries the point at which a body can be considered to be human.
